Japanese architect Jun Izue adds antique chic to grilled beef restaurant Ureshino

Written by Michael Lambe

Ureshino is a yakiniku restaurant in Umeda, one of the busiest and liveliest shopping and entertainment districts of Osaka. Yakiniku, is Japanese style chargrilled beef, and if you have ever eaten in a yakiniku restaurant then you will know that typically, they are cheerful, casual, eateries where beer and sake flow freely and nobody worries too much about interior design. Not so Ureshino. For the interior of Ureshino, the architect Jun Izue, has created an unusually elegant space in which to enjoy affordable barbecued beef cuisine.

The elegant interior of Ureshino

Located on the first floor of a building just a little removed from the main shopping area, the aim was to create a quiet, peaceful space where people can forget the busy streets outside. The building’s original walls and ceiling have been decorated in a retro chic style, to create a cool and stylish space with an elegant but cozy atmosphere. Izue has used antique furniture liberally to achieve the desired effect.

The entrance hall

Antique furnishings have been carefully selected for every corner of the restaurant. On the right is a table for the cash register, which has been constructed out of antique materials. Beyond that is an eye catching display of preserved flowers on a pretty side table.

The dining area

Though the view of the outside world is interrupted, by arranging a miniature garden in the foreground, the room acquires a relaxed and intimate atmosphere.

The sofa

With a long sofa as its centerpiece, this room has a luxuriously relaxing layout. When required the interior part of the room can also be separated with movable partitions to create a more intimate space.

The front

The outer wall before the entry way is fenced around with rustic looking timbers. This offers a buffer zone between the hustle and bustle outside the restaurant and the carefully decorated interior.
